Everyday English for Nursing by Tony Grice
[ Download from this server (9.42 Mb) ] 10.01.2016, 15:24

A specialist English language learning course book for nurses who are non-native speakers of English. The book is intended for self study but would serve as a major resource for a taught course. The book describes the current crisis in the British NHS to explain why overseas nurses are being recruited.

However, this is by way of an introduction and is a minor part. Otherwise it focuses on two things; the English used in clinical documentation and spoken English in the context of hospitals, illnesses and treatment. The book presents examples of formal medical English, colloquialisms, idioms and clinical notes.

The user practices reading and writing through exercises and the language is introduced through the medium of a series of simulated clinical cases

The book will consist of two parts, the first part containing text and exercises which are about nursing in the NHS the crisis, what nurses say about the crisis, the hospital hierarchy, pay and conditions, applying for jobs, etc. The second part is about communication in a simulated hospital setting. At its core are clinical forms relating to admission, patient care and hospital discharge. These forms and clinical documents generate exercises, which practice parts of language (idiomatic phrases, etc.)

The book will be highly illustrated assisting with the clarity and understanding of situations/scenarios.
